Storytelling with props
Can you make a magical scene on the carpet with your children’s play cloths, farm animals and people? Now weave a story around the scene. Well known stories can be acted out in a little floor play, in front of the sparkling eyes of your children. Stories told in this way by an adult encourage creative play. Children will imitate over time, setting up scenes and making up little stories by themselves. This in turn, develops their play, imagination, language and story telling skills. It is magic and fun.
In your child’s play corner include: coloured play cloths (particularly green and blue for land and water); wooden blocks for houses, walls and bridges; pine cones and unusually shaped wooden pieces for trees and giants; animals and people; and an array of natural objects. I have seen the ‘Three Billy Goats Gruff’ told using different sized pine cones for the goat family and a funny shaped bit of wood for the troll. Not one child said “That is not a goat, it is a pine cone!” They were imagining the story; it was alive and real to them. Go back to Storytelling Ideas for inspiration on all areas of stortytelling…
